New Partners Initiative 2024: Youth Awards

  • The Africa-Europe Foundation

The third edition of the Partners Initiative was successfully completed with a reach of 390 applications from 50 countries across Africa and Europe

Two categories were launched this year: Local Grant (Lot 1 – 5k EUR) and Cross-Continental Grants (Lot 2 – 10k EUR)
Applicants from 37 African countries and 13 European Countries
260 projects for Lot 1 and 68 projects for Lot 2 passed the initial eligibility screening.

179 projects on Climate and Development, 160 projects on Science, Education and Culture with majority of submissions from Kenya (72), Nigeria (44) and Uganda(43).

Final selection include:

Lot 1: 8 projects from in Africa (5) – Uganda, Tanzania (2), Mauritania, Cameroon and Europe (3) – Italy, France and Belgium covering activities related to Capacity building initiatives, Dialogue and exchange, and project development on issues regarding Climate, Policy, Oceans, Education, Science and Culture.

Lot 2: 9 projects from 7 Africa and 6 Europe ( co-leadership in 4 projects) covering Capacity building initiatives, Dialogue and exchange, Political Advocacy on issues regarding Finance, Advocacy, Climate and development, and science and culture.

Sustainable Ocean Alliance Tanzania

  • Empowers Youth: 40 Tanzanian youth address climate change and promote sustainable ocean practices.
  • Develops Solutions: Innovative solutions to marine issues through exchange, networking, and upskilling.
  • Capacity Building: Hands-on training and practical experience in ocean conservation and project development

The Women In Recycling Foundation

Country: Tanzania
Theme: Sustainable finance and climate action (Skills)
Project Title: Youth Dialogue on Sustainable Finance and Climate Action Initiatives

  • Youth Engagement: Engages Dar es Salaam youth in dialogues and activities for climate action.
  • Global Exchange: Hosts webinars with European youth leaders for community engagement and policy advocacy.
  • Impact: Increases youth climate action, sustainable finance knowledge, and environmental exchange.

  • Preserving African Heritage: The podcast highlights the importance of restitution in preserving African heritage.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: It aims to educate and inspire civic action among youth and stakeholders.
  • Digital Strategies: The podcast explores digital strategies for restitution.

Live Love Marseille

Location: France
Theme: Climate /Science, Education, and Culture
Project Title: Live Love Agora France

  • Combat misinformation on climate change by engaging young people in discussions with experts.
  • Debates will generate recommendations for government bodies through round tables with young people, experts, and moderators.
  • The initiative is a partnership with UfM, Institut Français, and stakeholders like the Mayor of Marseille and the Ambassador for the Mediterranean.

Country: Mauritania
Theme: Climate and Development (Adaptation)
Project Title: Greening Affected Communities: Reforestation and Empowerment in Mauritania

  • The project involves capacity building for local communities, focusing on agriculture and sustainable practices.
  • Local communities will receive training on agriculture and sustainable projects, which will be implemented to promote reforestation in Mauritania.
  • The project aligns with the African Environment Facility's (AEF) work on climate adaptation and agri-food systems, emphasizing capacity building as a key component.

Youth for Tax Justice Network (YTJN)

Country: Uganda
Theme: Finance
Project Title: Afro-Euro Youth Solidarity against Illicit Financial Flows (IFFs) and Unsustainable Public Debt

  • Youth leaders from 16 SADC member states and Norway gathered before the SADC Heads of State Summit to amplify youth voices on combating illicit financial flows.
  • Advocacy for UN Framework: Advocating for supporting the UN International Framework Convention on tax cooperation to mitigate financial and economic impacts.
  • SADC Model Public Finance Management: The youth leaders also pushed for implementing the SADC Model Public Finance Management law to address illicit financial flows.

African Law Students’ Organization (ALSO)

Country: Austria
Theme: Science, Education and Culture
Project Title: Cross boarder Negotiation Competition

  • Development of a licensing agreement or procurement contract addressing sustainable energy and raw material extraction, specifically aligned with SDGs 7, 9, 11, 13, and 15.
  • Enhanced negotiation, critical thinking, and public speaking skills for participants.
  • Strengthened networks between African and European law students and legal professionals.

Ubuntu Leaders Academy

Location: Portugal and Nigeria
Theme: Science, Education and Culture
Project Title: Ubuntu Leadership Exchange

  • Leadership Training and Club Establishment: Conducting leadership training for teachers and establishing local clubs.
  • Zoom Exchanges and Documentation: Facilitating Zoom exchanges and producing video and photography documentation.
  • Wider Impact: Directly impacting 120 students and 18 teachers, and indirectly benefiting around 2500 people in Nigeria and Portugal.

Cross-Network Awards- Lot 2

Cross-continental initiatives to be implemented on the basis of working across the two continents with either in-person or remote participation from at least two Members States, one each from the AU and EU.

  • Climate Change Awareness: Empowers youth in Gambia, Rwanda, and Germany to address climate change and sustainable development.

  • Global Impact: Fosters partnership between Africa and Europe to address climate issues.

African Network of Policy Experts (AFRINYPE)

Countries: Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Malawi
Theme: Science, Education, and Culture
Project Title: Bridging Policy and Practice for Sustainable Development in Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Malawi.

  • The project trains young policy experts and researchers on policy processes in Africa and Europe.
  • It promotes joint projects through research and policy briefs, showcasing best practices for the Africa-Europe Partnership.
  • The project aims to enhance participants' skills in policymaking, strategic communication, and policy engagement.

Ukuzola

Countries: Cameroon/ France

Project Title: Bridging Futures: Youth-Led Climate Action and Entrepreneurship Dialogues

  • Large-scale climate justice event with 300 youths from Cameroon and Europe, featuring the Climate Justice Mural tool to gather youth recommendations for COP29 and AU-EU ministerial
  • Supports entrepreneurs in Africa and Europe through knowledge and experience exchange
  • Aims to gather youth recommendations on climate justice for international forums

GLOBAL GIRL MEDIA
